U.S. steel news: 2010

United States’ raw steel production increased close to 38 percent from 2009 to 2010, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute.  The nation produced nearly 88.5 million tons of steel between January and December 2010, surpassing the 64.3 million tons of steel produced in 2009.  Still, this year’s U.S. steel market performed under historical averages, ranging from 90 million tons to 101.8 million tons, according to Steel Business Briefing.  Production for the year was down 13 percent from 2008 and eighteen percent from both 2006 and 2007.

Total 2010 U.S. steel imports were up 47 percent from a year earlier, and finished steel import market shares reached 21 percent.  To continue domestic steel market improvements in the New Year “will depend in no small measure on ensuring that U.S. producers are not further injured by surges of dumped and subsidized imports,” said AISI president and CEO Thomas J. Gibson after reviewing  the 2010 SIMA data.
