Cold drawn bar is the most common type of cold finished steel used in manufacturing. To make cold drawn bar, hot rolled material is pulled (drawn) through a carbide die at room temperature (i.e. cold-drawn). The hot roll bar is larger than what the finished bar is after the cold draw process.
Cold drawn bar is most commonly used in automotive and machining applications.
AVAILABLE GRADES OF COLD DRAWN BAR
The close tolerances allow for much smoother use in machines and less adjustments are needed for size variances.
The allowable tolerances of cold drawn bars tend to make them straighter, producing much less vibration while machining, so the bars are easier to feed.
Cold drawing increases both the tensile and yield strengths of steel. The yield strength can be doubled. Ductility is reduced somewhat while hardness is increased. The expectation is that during the cold drawing process, the bar properties are changed the same amount throughout the bar in most cases.
Cold drawn bars are produced using Special Bar Quality (SBQ) steel. In most cases, the cold drawing method inherently improves machinability. This translates to making chips easier to break, increased tool life, faster manufacturing runs, and easier and cleaner cutting, saving you production and labor time.

For all your cold drawn bar needs, we offer the following additional services.
This inspection process is a form of NDT testing. The focus of Eddy Current is to detect and characterize surface and sub-surface flaws in steel.
A chamfer is a transitional edge on the ends of the bar stock (usually at a 45° angle) to aide in bar feeding.
Capital Steel & Wire offers extensive precision saw cutting services and partners with other providers that can Quench & Temper, Anneal, Coat, etc. in cut blank form. Spend more time making parts and less time prepping long bar in your plant.
With strategic warehouse locations and our investment in YOU, Capital Steel & Wire can tailor a JIT delivery program to meet your needs.
